Utopian Society..

Yesterday, you got to start working on your Utopian Society. I was really impressed with the conversations I heard and some of you were quite creative.

I want you to "visit" a society that considers themselves a Utopian Society. Go on a virtual tour of the Twin Oaks Society by clicking on the following link: http://www.twinoakscommunity.org/.

Once you are there click on the "About". Read over the information they supply and try your best to picture yourself there. Would you like it? Why? Why not? Would you start your own Utopian Society?

How many people do they have in their community?

How much land do they have?

What sort of jobs do they have?

Who makes the decisions there?

What do they do for recreational purposes?

Can you become a member? How?

Answer those questions in the comment box below. Then elaborate on whether or not you would choose to live in that society.

PROJECT!

Good Morning!

I decided to post this on the main page because it's so much FUN and it's really important!

You will be creating your very own Utopian community! You will design the community and generate the "rules" to live by. In the novel, The Giver, Jonas lives in a Utopia where the world around him functions only one way for everyone and as far as they are concerned, it is the BEST way. Utopia is defined as an ideally perfect place, especially in it's social, political, and moral aspects. This place would be so perfect that others would want to join your community and never leave.

You will draw your Utopia. Give it a name, use color, and be creative! By each landmark, or some where on your picture, you will address the following topics.

Education:

  • What will be taught?
  • What subjects are required?
  •  How will education serve the community?
  • What special classes or extracurricular options will be offered?
  • Will you even have school?
Government
  • Who makes the laws and how are they enforced?
  • Are there laws?
  • Is it a democracy or a dictatorship?
  • How do citizens know about the laws? Are they posted somewhere?
  • What happens if someone breaks the law?
Family
  • How many children is each family allowed?
  • What are the household standards and the standards of living?
  • Matriarchy and patriarchy or neither?
  • Responsibilities of parents and kids?
Environment
  • Whose job is it to protect the environment?
  • Will it be in danger or is it a major resource?
Community "Rules"
  • Guidelines to live by
  • Who is in charge?
  • What types of rituals or specific ways of living will be forced upon, reinforced, or celebrated in your society?
This project is worth 50 points.

Outline is due by Monday 9/22/2014.

Rough draft is due by Friday 9/26/2014.

Final copy is due by Wednesday 10/1/2014.

Hold Up!

A LOT has been going on in our classroom the past week. So much in fact, I haven't had much time to update our blog!

This week our class has been learning to take an inquiry approach to Science. You all applied this concept during their mystery box activity in which they had to ask questions on what was in the box. After everyone had all agreed upon what was in the box, you had to draw a diagram showing where exactly in the box it was located. This activity taught you what questions to ask and how beneficial these questions are when doing research. This was a great introductory lesson in getting into the scientific mind set.

After learning the importance asking questions in science, we learned how to create a hypothesis, gather data, record data, and then form a conclusion. You guys did an experiment comparing the volume of water to oil. You had to follow the procedure set forth in the directions and produce questions as to why you were following these steps. Then, before you mixed the water and the oil you had to create a hypothesis as to what would happen. After that, you performed the final step and recorded the data.

In History, our class has been studying the Neolithic Agricultural Revolution. You completed a simulation activity in which you had to live and barter with their capital goods. You used units of wheat to be able to feed their family, buy new tools such as hoes, sickles, and canal systems. You learned that wheat that was originally used to survive on turned into a capital good you could utilize to buy things and improve the standard of living. You had to consider the amount of wheat your families would need, what you would keep in case of a drought, and then what you needed to help  produce more goods.

What was your favorite activity so far? Please comment below and share your favorite one so far and something you hope to learn about in the future!!

NOW, go to Chapter 10 Summary and respond and then check out the Utopian Society page.

Happy Monday!

Good Morning!!

Please go to the chapter summary links on the right hand side of the page and review chapter 8 and 9 and respond to the questions in the comment box.

Feedback!

Good Morning!

Over the weekend I was able to go over your posts from the Chapter Summaries for our class novel. Overall, you guys did a nice job.

We need to remember to use capitalization when starting a sentence and punctuation when ending a sentence.

Also, use complete sentences. When you write "no that would be weird", I get confused... What is weird? Why are you telling me no? This is called a fragment sentence. Sentences require a subject (who or what) and a predicate (what is happening).

Lastly, punctuation is critical! Are you saying it as a statement requiring just a period (.) or is that suppose to be an exclamatory sentence requiring an exclamation point (!).

Make sure you have headphones on and watch the video below on how to write a complete sentence.

HOW TO WRITE A COMPLETE SENTENCE

After you have finished watching the video, go back and read the comments I left for you on your posts for the chapter summaries 1-3. Respond to my comment or to another peer's post utilizing the techniques from the video.

See me if you have any questions!

The Giver Chapter Summaries

Today  I would like to you to look at our Giver Chapter Summary Pages. This is located along the right side of your computer screen. Open Chapter 1, read the review, and comment on the page with your answer to the questions. Go back to the home page and repeat that process for Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 as well. We fell behind with this and need to get caught up!

Ask me for help if you need it.

Good luck!

Gym Day!

Good Morning!! Today is Thursday, the day we are going to the YMCA. We will be going every Thursday but we will rotate what events we are doing. Today, we will be swimming so next Thursday we will be going to the gym. Are you excited?!

Yesterday you guys posted some behavioral expectations for the van ride and the YMCA. Here are my expectations:

1. Follow all directions the first time given.
2. Be respectful of yourself, others, and the building/van.
3. Be prepared. If you don't bring a real bathing suit AND towel, you are not swimming.
4. Keep your hands/feet to yourself in the van and at the YMCA.
5. Appropriate/encouraging language only.

You can put your bathing suit on at school but remember to take ALL of your clothes with you to change into after swimming. We will be leaving school at 9:45 to be at the gym at 10 o'clock. You will walk into the locker room and put your personal items in a locker. You will not touch anyone else's personal items. I will be waiting on the other side of  the locker room for you. You will not be in the locker room for any more than 2 minutes before I send a male staff member in to get you. You will swim for half an hour before I start calling people to get out of the pool. Once your name is called you will get out of the pool without arguing or complaining, go to the locker room, shower, put on your dry clothes, and put your wet clothes in your bag. This should take approximately 10 minutes per student. If you are in the locker room too long, I will send a male staff member in to get you. Then you will return to the pool to sit and wait with me. Once everyone has completed this process, we will walk out to the van and return to school. We should be back around 11:20 which we will then proceed with our typical daily schedule.

Please comment below stating you have read the expectations and procedures and understand them. If you have a question, come see me, and we will discuss it.

Wednesday, September 3rd

Good Morning!

How do you like our morning routine so far? Are you managing everything alright?

Tomorrow, Thursday, we'll be going to the YMCA. We'll be swimming in the pool. What do you think some of the rules should be for our trip to the YMCA? What swimming attire do you think would be appropriate for this? How do you think you should behave in the van on the way to the YMCA? What about when you are in the pool?

Respond in at least 3 complete sentences. Complete sentences utilize capitalization, subject, predicate, and punctuation.

Happy Tuesday!

Good Morning! I hope you enjoyed your three day weekend for Labor Day!

Do you know why we celebrate Labor Day? Some people think it's to signify the end of Summer. But actually, it's a day dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It was first passed as a legal holiday on June 28, 1894.

How did the idea even come about? Working conditions then were unsafe, unsanitary, they worked long hours, and were treated poorly. They also made children work since it was legal then. Many factories were dark, dirty, and dangerous. Driven by poverty, these children were required to work long days (as many as 18 hours).

Eventually, people began protesting against their current work conditions. After a long battle, things slowly began to change in America and working conditions improved, child labor laws were put in place, and we now celebrate the achievements of our American Workers.

What does Labor Day mean to you? Please respond in the comment section below.

Second to last day of ESY!!

First of all, click on the link below (Happy Wednesday).

Happy Wednesday!!

Now that you've enjoyed that, I'm not listing much to do on here since we didn't get to do yesterdays post. Please go to the post from yesterday and do what is listed there for today's work.

We will FINISH chapter 11 of Lord of the Flies today and possibly chapter 12. If we don't get both chapters done today, we will finish chapter 12 tomorrow, answer the questions, and then watch the movie. What better way to end ESY? : )

Below is a sneak peek from yesterdays field trip to Lake Tobias. You guys did an AWESOME job yesterday and I was very proud of you all. I was impressed with how well behaved you were, the way you respected the park rules, and how well you managed the heat! Good job! I hope you all enjoyed yourself. I will upload more soon.

This is the Cane Toad. Do you remember why she had to have gloves on while handling this toad?

This is Chewy the sloth. Do you remember if it was 2 toed sloth or a 3 toed sloth?

Last one for today, this is the Alligator Snapping Turtle. Why did she have to handle this one carefully?

Field Trip to Lake Tobias!

Today is our school field trip to Lake Tobias! I've never been there before so I'm pretty excited about this, how about you guys? Here is their website if you would like to check it out so you know what to look forward too!

Lake Tobias

Let's review a few general things for our field trip...

* We will be on the bus for about 2 hours! You need to stay in your seat, keep your hands and feet to yourself, and use a whisper voice.
* If someone on the bus asks you to quiet down or to leave them alone, DO SO!
* If I have to speak to you more than twice on the bus, I will start docking time from your field trip.
* We stay together as a group in the park. DO NOT WALK OFF.
* Be respectful of their property.
* Follow the park rules.
* No running or screaming.
* Appropriate language and conversations.
* If I have to speak to you regarding poor choices three times in the park, you will be taken back to the bus.
* If you need a break, ask for one.
* Have a good time. : )

Yesterday you were to read an article I posted from ABC news about a young boy, Danny, who is battling cancer. His birthday is next week and all he asked for was some birthday cards in the mail. So, we did just that!

All the classrooms had an opportunity to sign a card and I mailed them out last night to Danny. I hope he enjoys the cards!

Last week we went to Garfield's for a dining experience and I forgot to post the pictures! Here are some!

I hope you all enjoyed our visit there! The staff at Garfield's were very welcoming to us and made our experience one to remember! Thanks Miss Sharon for inviting Brittany and I to attend!

Feel free to leave a comment below regarding anything you would like, then hop on over to Lord of the Flies Chapter 10, watch the summary and respond to the questions.

Last week of ESY!

Good Morning Guys!

I have a lot to share today!

First of all, today is our field trip to the Sports Museum! I hope you all came prepared and excited to hear about the history of sports at Penn State! Tomorrow we have our field trip to Lake Tobias, YOU MUST HAVE $10 TO GO! Make sure you have handed in your permission slip and your money.

Please click on the link, read the article, and respond below with your comments. Then, come see me for further details.

Lastly, go to Lord of the Flies Chapter 9 Summary Page and follow the directions there.

On Thursday we went to the Planetarium and here is what Brittany had to share in her Field Trip Reflection:

What was your favorite part about this field trip?: The dome and the 3D tour.

Why?: Because I think it was cool I also learned from it.

Tell about 3 new things you learned?: I learned that (light) pollution makes it hard to see the milky way. I also learned that there's more than one galaxy. Last but not least I learned that we will get more stars.

Would you recommend this field trip to your friends? Why or why not?: Yes, because it's a cool place and it teaches you all about space. I really liked it.

Nice job Brittany!

Another Field Trip!

  1. Today we have our field trip to Garfields! This is an opportunity for you to experience going to a restaurant, ordering your own food, enjoying the company of your peers, and paying for your meal. Here are a few things we all need to remember...
  2. Have Manners at a Restaurant Step 2.jpg

    1Don't talk too loud.
Don't yell across the table or across the room.If you see someone you know, walk up to their table to say hello.
  3. Have Manners at a Restaurant Step 3.jpg

    2Chew with your mouth closed.
No one wants to see your food inside your mouth. Also, if you get food around or on your mouth, don't use your tongue to lick it away. Use a napkin.
  4. Have Manners at a Restaurant Step 4.jpg

3Sit up straight and don't slouch.
  5. Have Manners at a Restaurant Step 5.jpg

Keep your elbows off the table.
If you rest your wrists on the table with your hands crossed, this shows to others that you want to talk and have a conversation.
  6. Have Manners at a Restaurant Step 7.jpg

When ordering, ask questions about any dishes you don't understand.
If something goes wrong with the dish you ordered, politely tell the waiter or waitress, and ask for the dish to be "fixed" or order another dish.

Ugh!

Ok folks, so yesterday when I got to school, the power was out! Which meant, no blogging. So today I have a lot to share.

Here are some photos from your Continents project presentation! Those of you who have presented so far did a wonderful job! You touched on the 5 themes of Geography: Movement, Location, Region, Human-Environment Interactions, and Place. Good job!

Our Magic Rocks have finished growing! The blue rock was the tallest... until I broke it. Sorry! Now the green- "the late bloomer" is the tallest.

Here is what you hypothesized:

Colton: Explosion
Brittany: The stones will dissolve and change the color of the water.
Anthoni: The water will fuzz and the stones will break.

We did the procedure of the experiment, identified the variables, and recorded the results. Now I want you to confirm or deny your hypothesis in your conclusion statements.

Then go to Lord of the Flies Chapter 5 watch the summary and respond.

Friday, July 11, 2014

Happy Friday!

It's Friday! This morning you are going to complete your posters for your continents project, review your research, and then this after you will present to the class! Good luck! You can do it!

Yesterday we went on our field trip to the Pennsylvania Military Museum and you guys had a lot to say about it when you filled out your Field Trip Reflection Forms! I loved it! Here's what some of you had to say:

Brittany: " I learned that all the cars used by the military were stick shift. I learned that they wore different helmets through out the different wars. I also learned that in the sky there is a lot of pressure that soldiers in the Air Force have to know about when flying."

Anthoni: " I learned the ambulance wagon was used along side truck ambulances. The motor ambulances could carry up to 6 wounded soldiers."

Colton: "One thing I learned is that they used dead bodies to hold up the trenches. Another thing I learned is that the Wright Brothers were not the first ones to fly. I also learned that there is a male and female tank. The female tank can rotate 360 degrees and the male cannot."

All of you said said that you would recommend this field trip to your friend because you had fun and you felt you had learned a lot!

Here are some pictures of our Magic Rocks! The first picture was one I took yesterday morning upon arrival! Look at how much they grew! The blue rock is catching up! The second picture was one I took at the end of the day, do you notice any differences? And the last one, is one I took today. We added some more rocks to the tank yesterday afternoon, can you see them?

If you didn't go back to Wednesday's blog and correct your answer, please do so today.

Exciting Things Happening...

Good Morning!

Yesterday we learned about the process of performing a science experiment such as creating a hypothesis, identifying a procedure, identifying and explaining variables, performing the experiment, recording the results and stating a conclusion.

We used this process while doing an experiment with "Magic Rocks". The Magic Rocks are chunks of metal salts that have been stabilized by being dispersed in aluminum hydroxide. The magic solution is a solution of sodium silicate in water. The metal salts react with the sodium silicate to form the characteristic colored precipitant (chemical towers about 4" high).

Here are some pictures from our science experiment yesterday!

Today, I want you to go to the science station and look at our Magic Rocks. What do they look like today? How tall are they? Which one is the tallest? Do you think the color effects the rate that the rocks grow? Respond with your answers in the comment box below!

Today we have our field trip to the Pennsylvania Military Museum! What are you looking forward to the most?

Today is our field trip to the Earth and Mineral Science Museum, how excited are you?!

Tuesday, June 24, 2014

Heads up, field trip coming up!

So this week we have our first field trip to the Earth & Minerals Science Museum! We did a whole unit on Minerals towards the end of the regular school year as well as a unit on the Rock Cycle! Our review today on minerals was a little rough so let's review one more time.

Mineral: A naturally formed, inorganic solid that has a definite crystalline structure.
Elements: Pure substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by ordinary chemical means.

Is it a mineral? By asking the following four questions, you can tell whether an object is a mineral or not.
1.) Is it nonliving material?
2.) Is it a solid?
3.) Does it have a crystalline structure?
4.) Is it formed in nature?

Atoms: The smallest part of an element that has all the properties of that element.
Compound: A substance made of two or more elements that have been chemically joined or bonded.
Crystals: Solid, geometric forms of minerals produced by a repeating pattern of atoms or molecules.

Two Groups of Minerals: Silicate and Nonsilicate.
Silicate: Minerals that contain a combination of silicon and oxygen.
Nonsilicate: Minerals that do not contain a combination of the elements silicon and oxygen.

Identifying minerals:
Luster: The way the surface reflects light.
Streak: Color of a mineral in powdered form.
Cleavage: The tendency of some minerals to break along smooth, flat surfaces.
Fracture: The tendency of some minerals to break along curved or irregular surfaces.
Hardness: Mohs Hardness Scale is used to determine the minerals resistance to being scratched.

Answer the following questions in the comment box:

 1. Which of the following is NOT true about a mineral?
 a. It is a solid.
 b. It has a crystalline structure.
 c. It is not a living thing.
 d. It is made in a lab.

 2. What is the smallest part of an element called?
 a. an atom
 b. a native element
 c. a compound
 d. a crystal

 3. What is a substance made of two or more chemically bonded elements
called?
 a. an atom
 b. a native element
 c. a compound
 d. a crystal

 4. Which of the following is NOT true of crystals?
 a. They are solids.
 b. They have a geometric form.
 c. They are alive.
 d. They have a repeating inner structure.

 5. What two groups are minerals divided into?
 a. atoms and compounds
 b. crystals and solids
 c. silicate minerals and nonsilicate minerals
 d. hard minerals and soft minerals

Also, what are your thoughts on our upcoming field trip? Are you excited? Do you think it will be fun or boring? Are you hoping to learn something new? Tell me in the comment section along with your answers.

REMEMBER IF YOU DO NOT HAVE YOUR PERMISSION SLIP IN BY FRIDAY MORNING, YOU WILL NOT GO ON THE FIELD TRIP!!
