The Giver Chapter 3 Summary

Jonas' father brings home baby Gabriel and Lilly teases Jonas that they have the same color eyes. Their eyes are different than the rest of the community because theirs are light. Jonas never really took notice because they didn't have many mirrors in the community and if they did, they did not use them.

Lilly adores Gabriel and quickly learns that being a birth-mother is NOT a good job. Jonas thinks to himself that Lilly should be the speaker for the community since she never stops talking.

Jonas and Asher were playing catch with an apple and when they tossed it something changed the apple while it was in midair. Jonas can't explain what it was. Later, Jonas was scolded over the loud speakers of the community when they reminded everyone not to hoard the food.

1. Does our community utilize mirrors on a daily basis? Do we acknowledge change and try to look different from one another?
2. Do we have birth-mothers in our community? Is this an odd concept?
3. Do we utilize loudspeakers in our community? What would it be like if we did?

  1. We do not utilize loudspeakers anywhere in the us except like hospitals and schools but the are actually called paigers. If we were to have loudspeakers on the side of the street it would be very weird and take a while to get used to. There would probably be protest.

    1. I agree with you Gary, it would be quite odd to be walking down the street and here someone come over a loud speaker saying "make sure your 7 year old's hair is in pig tails today". And yes, there would definitely be protests over that! No one likes to be told what to do in our society.

why would you have to look like someone else every body looks diffrent from one another simple?
if there was loud speakers it would be odd because it would be like attention every body has to have their shoes on at all times.

    1. Good job Hunter. We don't have birth-mothers in the same context they do in the story. That would be odd if we had designated people to give birth and only they were the ones allowed to do so. Even more odd, the fact that they give these babies to designated families that are selected by Elders.

I agree with you, in our society it's acceptable for everyone to look different from one another. However in this community it is not. Why do you think that is?

Nice example for the loud speaker question.

      Good job Hunter.
