The Giver Chapter 2 Summary

We ended Chapter 1 with Jonas' parents sending Lilly to her room so they could have a private conversation with Jonas regarding his apprehension about the Ceremony of Twelves. Jonas reflected on all the changes that occur in December such as the Ceremony of 1.
His family joked about the rules regarding riding bicycles and how no one took it seriously. Eventually, the rule will change but the elders have to discuss it and decide or take it to the Receiver to decide. The Receiver is a very special individual though so people do not like to disturb him.
Jonas' father knew what his assignment would be at the Ceremony of Twelves when he was a boy. He had done so many volunteer hours at the nursery, that everyone in the community assumed so.
Jonas' parents remind him that after the Ceremony of Twelves, his life will change. He will be mostly with peers from his assignment group, not so much his old friends.

  1. The rule regarding riding your bicycle is you were able to get one at the ceremony of 9. The only thing was this rule was always followed. You always got your bike at age 9 but some people didn't listen it was almost always broken

    1. Was it a big deal that it was broken? Were people released over breaking this rule?

    1. The ceremony of 1 is when families received their newborn babies. Yes, you had to be 9 to ride a bicycle in this community but as Gary said, this rule was often broken. Technically, at the age of 9 you RECEIVED your bicycle. An assignment in the context of the story was not a homework assignment, it was the assignment of your job for the rest of your life.

    1. USE COMPLETE SENTENCES!!!!!!!! ACK!

But, yes. At the ceremony of 1, families received their babies. You did have to be 9 to receive your bicycle. And your "assignment" was your job for the rest of your life while in the community. Good job Colton.
