Ch. 12 & 13 Summary

Student Chapter Summaries:

Jonas reported to The Giver in chapter 12 that he is seeing things differently, the faces in the audience, the apple, and today, Fiona's hair. The Giver explaines he is seeing color now, that's his ability to see beyond. The Giver transmits the memory of the sled again and Jonas now sees the sled is red.

The Giver tells Jonas about long ago, before sameness, everyone saw in color. When they as a community decided to give up their differences and conform to the concept of sameness, they sacrificed the ability to see different colors.

In Chapter 13, we learn that Jonas because he can not hold on to the memory of color and see it every where. Jonas tries to transmit the memory of a flower to Asher and of an elephant to his Father and sister, Lily, but fails to do so.

The Giver and Jonas discuss the struggles of The Giver trying to have a spouse. The Giver also explains the he gives advice to the committee as needed, but they rarely ask for it.  We learned that some days when Jonas reports to the Annex, he is sent away because The Giver is in too much pain. Jonas realized he could help him by taking away some of his painful memories. Jonas receives a painful memory of the hill and the sled....
